About Cancer Screenings
A cancer screening is a thorough assessment that checks for signs and symptoms of breast and ovarian cancer. Receiving regular check-ups and knowing your family history can help discover the disease at an early stage before symptoms arise. Typically, this test is performed during an annual well-woman exam. Our professionals will take into consideration your age, genetics, and personal health to determine whether you are in need of a cancer screening. During your consultation at The Caring Center for Women, one of our OBGYNs will ask a series of questions that will also aid in determining your risk factors. We also recommend this assessment if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Call our office in New Braunfels, TX to schedule an appointment with one of our five board-certified OBGYNs (Drs. Teresa Irwin, Barrett Blaue, Kari Fay, Beth Reid, and Brittney Schumann, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.) or board-eligible OBGYN (Dr. Lauren Hermann) today.

Screening Options
The Caring Center for Women offers both breast and ovarian cancer screenings. During a breast assessment, there will be a physical examination. We may also refer you for a mammogram if age appropriate or we feel something during the examination. In some cases, a breast MRI may be necessary.
A mammogram is usually performed on women over the age of 35 or if there is a noticeable lump in the breast, you are experiencing abnormal discomfort, or have a family history of breast cancer.
An ovarian cancer screening can be performed using a transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) or a blood test. During a TVUS, an ultrasound wand will be inserted into the vagina to assess the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Receiving a regular pap test is essential for early detection.
Other Considerations
If your tests come back positive for breast or ovarian cancer, we will refer you to a local specialist for further testing and treatment. We have worked closely with several specialists in Central Texas for years because of their high credentials, education, and compassionate bedside manner. Our goal at The Caring Center for Women is to help you receive the medical care you need and deserve.
