About Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is not only for cosmetic purposes. Our doctors at the Caring Center for Women have helped many women with vaginal atrophy (looseness in the vaginal canal). Not only can this atrophy cause the vagina to stretch, it can decrease sensation and the effectiveness of the muscles in the pelvic area. This may eventually lead to a prolapse (where an organ can fall into the vaginal canal). When the excess skin is removed and the canal is tightened, it may help prevent other disorders from occurring in the future.

This surgery can eliminate pain and discomfort with the added benefit of increased sexual self-confidence and gratification for the woman and her partner. Consulting with an OBGYN, who has many years of experience, is generally the next step. Depending on the severity of the skin, one of our board-certified obstetrician-gynecologists (Drs. Teresa Irwin, Barrett Blaue, Kari Fay, Beth Reid, and Brittney Schumann) or board-eligible obstetrician-gynecologist (Dr. Lauren Hermann) can consult with you about how you can best treat your vaginal atrophy.

Treatment Details

A vaginoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 1 – 2 hours for the operation. Your medical team may require you to stay overnight in the hospital for observation. During the procedure, the loose skin surrounding the vaginal opening will be removed and the muscles will be tightened on the inside and outside of the vagina. The incision will be stitched up with dissolvable sutures.

Other Considerations

Vaginoplasty patients are usually released to return to work 5 – 7 days after the procedure. Until the sutures have dissolved (in about 6 weeks), heavy lifting, exercise, and sexual activity should be avoided. In less than 1% of the patients who have the vaginoplasty surgery, complications occurred, such as temporary bleeding, infection, and wound reopening. We give all patients strict instructions and precautions regarding care of the area and adequate pain medication to be comfortable during recovery.
