About Endometriosis

Endometriosis can be a painful condition that occurs when the endometrium (the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus) begins growing outside of the uterus. When menstruation occurs, the misplaced tissue has nowhere to exit the body and becomes trapped. In some cases, cysts, scar tissue, and adhesions can form on or around the ovaries. The most common symptom associated with endometriosis is severe pelvic and abdominal pain during menstruation, but it also causes pain during or after intercourse, pain with bowel movements or urination, heavy or excessive bleeding during menstruation, and infertility.

The cause of endometriosis cannot always be detected, but there are some possible sources. Hormone imbalance, immune disorders, and complications after a hysterectomy (without removing the ovaries), or cesarean section are all thought to be causes of endometriosis. The physicians at the Caring Center for Women in New Braunfels, TX provide comprehensive diagnostic testing and treatment for patients experiencing the unpleasant symptoms of endometriosis. Depending on the severity of the condition, we offer several treatment options that can eradicate symptoms.

Treatment Options

Hormone Treatment

Hormone-balancing medications can be effective in slowing the growth of endometrial tissue. There are several different forms of medication, including birth control pills, patches, and vaginal rings. Intrauterine devices can also be used to relieve the symptoms of endometriosis and stunt the growth of tissue.

Endometrial Ablation

Our practice offers endometrial ablation as both in-office and outpatient procedures. We provide cryoablation, NovaSure, and ThermaChoice — all performed under a local anesthetic. Cryoablation works by freezing the lining of the uterus, while both NovaSure and ThermaChoice use heat to destroy the lining.

Surgical Action

In some cases, surgery can be performed to remove as much endometrial tissue as possible. Our practice uses the MyoSure technology as a minimally invasive procedure to remove only the targeted tissue in the uterus. This procedure can also preserve both the uterus and ovaries. However, if this surgery and other treatments have not been successful in treating endometriosis, a hysterectomy may be the only other option. This involves the removal of the uterus and cervix. The da Vinci robot-assisted hysterectomies are performed in a hospital laparoscopically under a general anesthetic.

Other Considerations

The severity of your endometriosis and its symptoms may affect your treatment options. Our experienced team of physicians at the Caring Center for Women will work with you to evaluate the best course of treatment, while also taking into account your needs and desires. Less aggressive forms of treatments may be prescribed initially and will be altered depending on their effectiveness before surgical options will be suggested.
