When pregnancy, childbirth, or strenuous delivery weakens the muscles in your pelvic area, prolapse of the uterus can occur (the uterus will sag into the vaginal canal). When the muscles finally give into the prolapse, you may experience lower back soreness and continual pressure, uncomfortable sexual intercourse, and the feeling something is in your vaginal canal all the time. Every (uterine, cervical, or vaginal) prolapse patient will have different levels of progression of distention, symptoms, and reasons for the prolapse development. Our doctors at the Caring Center for Women (Drs. Irwin, Blaue, Fay, Reid, Schumann, and Hermann) have been treating women with this condition for more than 25 years. During a consultation at our San Marcos or New Braunfels, TX office, our award-winning medical team will try to get to know you better and learn more about your lifestyle before making a decision on your personalized treatment.

"Absolutely LOVE this office! I am a pt of Dr. Fay's at the NB location and cant say enough wonderful things. I am due to deliver soon and every appointment I had over the last 9 months has been great. I never waited more than 10 minutes to be seen, the staff were consistent, friendly, and Dr. Fay never makes you feel rushed or uncomfortable. She takes her time answering all your questions and knows her stuff! I have seen many different OBGYNs and by far, she is the BEST"- G.S. / Facebook / Oct 31, 2018

Your treatment of prolapse will reflect the severity of your symptoms or how far the specified organ has dropped into the vagina. We will provide you with a private physical examination and consultation the Caring Center for Women. Then, we will make a treatment plan consisting of the following options:
- Losing excess weight if overweight (adds pressure to the pelvic floor)
- Avoiding foods or drinks that may inflame the surrounding organs (bowel and bladder)
- Refraining from strenuous exercise or heavy weight lifting
- Scheduling bathroom breaks before needing to urinate to retrain the bladder
- Performing Kegel exercise to strengthen weak pelvic floor muscles
- Wearing sanitary napkins to adult diapers according to your level of need and absorbency
- Biofeedback training and physical therapy (Kegel exercises)
- Electrical stimulation of the nerves and muscles in the pelvic floor
- Urethral or rectal bulking agent injections
Pessary inserts with hormone supplementation
- Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery
- Pelvic reconstructive surgery
- Bladder and bowel control surgery
Vaginal prolapse is hereditary and can happen to a woman without ever being pregnant. When estrogen drops in menopause or the removal of the ovaries, the lack of estrogen weakens the tissues and muscles of the uterus. This increases the possibility of prolapse. If you have a family history of prolapse, you are more at risk of developing a prolapse as well.
